The Carpathia reached the scene at 5:30 a.m., three hours after the Titanic went down with 1,503 passengers and crew. Carpathia passenger Howard Chapin later noted that the night was "bitterly cold." The captain of the Carpathia, Arthur Rostron, ordered his ship to be turned around and directed the ship's crew to make preparations for the rescue of more than 2,000 people. News that the Titanic, the largest passenger steamship at the time, was sinking was received by Carpathia's wireless operator, shortly after midnight.
